Porter station elevators are now working [Jul. 31st, 2012|04:18 pm]
Porter Square
All parts of the Porter T station are accessible by elevator once again. The elevators had been out of service since March 2011.

The subway elevator was finished last week, and the commuter rail elevator yesterday.

There's still construction to build a second elevator, as a backup if one needs work.

book book book [Mar. 19th, 2012|03:56 pm]
Porter Square

I recently saw some old children's books on the floor in the street-level lobby of the Porter T station. There was a jar with a few dollars in it. Nobody was there, and there were no signs or prices posted.

What was this? Some sort of honor-system book sale?

Some resources for Hurricane Irene in the City of Cambridge [Aug. 26th, 2011|08:02 pm]
Porter Square

Stay safe, everyone. I just ran into Roy, the homeless guy in the neighborhood, and he seemed to think he could hang out in a coffee shop until the storm blows over. I told him about the shelter at the Peabody School on Rindge Ave. (There's also one at the King Open School on Cambridge St.)

I've made a list of useful Hurricane Irene city phone numbers, links, Twitter feeds to follow, and more, and posted them here:

I just got a call from Cambridge's new CodeRed phone alert system, as well. You can add your cell phone (or get your number put on a Do Not Call) list, by following the various instructions on the city website, here: http://www.cambridgema.gov/AlertNetwork

Stay dry and out of the wind!

Help HONK! Happen [Jul. 31st, 2011|12:27 am]
Porter Square

(cross posted to Davis Sq. community as well, since HONK! takes place in both places. Hope that is ok...)

Long time listener, first time caller/poster.

I'm one of the people who helps organize the HONK! festival that takes place Somerville and Cambridge each year. If you haven't heard of it, HONK! is a festival of activist street bands that brings music and spectacle to all corners of Davis Square one day of the year, bands to community centers/areas, a community parade from Davis to Harvard Square, and some other cool stuff. More info can be found at www.honkfest.org.

I wanted to let you know two things about HONK! this year:

1) HONK! is happening a week early this year on October 1st, 2nd and 3rd instead of our usual Columbus Day weekend schedule so we don't conflict with Yom Kippur.

2) If you dig HONK! as much as I do and want to support it, please consider contributing to our Kickstarter campaign to raise funds to help bring bands from afar (only 18 days left!):

(anything you can do to pass that URL around to other HONK! fans would be much appreciated)

Hope to see you all at HONK! this year!
